I always love the nature of dissecting causality. If you stare at it too hard it’s almost like looking straight into the sun. The level of which one has control over anything is so finite. You can’t even really control what you are doing now, you can only control decisions over what you are about to do in the next moment, the rest is just riding out the consequences.
Same too with others around you. All you can do is bear influence. The level of that influence being dependent on the influence you have bore in the past.
Of course, if you look even deeper and bring along with it the baggage presented by things like physiology and psychology, you are left scratching your head wondering how much actual control over what you do ‘next’ you really have. (Twain’s “What is Man?” comes to mind)
That brings you around to really sticky questions like “what is creativity? really?” One great thing about human creativity is the ability to take things otherwise unrelated and combine them in new ways. So even if we are just the sum of our experience as far as our brain memory goes, it is still up to us to find new ways to put all the old things together. And of course each one of us drags along behind us a figurative sack of things from our past memories.
I’ve long had a theory that those who are very creative are just a white coat away from a padded cell. It leaves me to wonder if sometimes, the most creative combinations of old stuff don’t come from some random misfire in the brain that’s going off all the time and some of us are just better at picking out the peaches from the pits!
