I have been enjoining a number of discussions on the ‘ground zero mosque’ and seem to keep seeing a repeating thread. What I am starting to dub a new anti-Muslim prejudice. I am by no means discouraging people from voicing their opinion and tend to support the opinion that a Mosque at ground zero is in very poor taste and have even stated that it reeks of ‘slap in the face’.
At the same time, I have looked up the Imam and seen his history. There are things that can be taken either way, but for the most part he appears to be a more moderate, future thinking leader of people of Islamic faith. That’s what we want to encourage isn’t it?
To say there is an active campaign ongoing against the Mosque, Islam, the Imam and anything even semi-sorta related to Islam anywhere near ground zero would be an understatement. But need I remind anyone that Islam did not bring the world trade centers down?
I am a hunter. I’m a gun owner and 2nd amendment advocate. I’m a white male descendant of anglo-saxon heritage. I’m 1/3rd Polish. I’m a supporter of various causes including but not limited to equal treatment under the law regardless of race, creed, gender, religion, lifestyle, etc.
With that said, I am aware of what I call (borrowing from the Nuge) ‘Bubba’ hunters. I am aware of reckless gun crimes. I know of nonsense like white extremism. I’ve met my a few Polish people who behaved stupidly or dressed strange (my own grandfather once thought a yellow/green plaid jacket and purple dress pants were sufficient for going out to eat). I’ve met promiscuous gay people with no self-control, fetishistic transgendered people who are more interested in freaking people out than expressing their own gender identity. Living near Detroit, I’ve seen more than my fair share of people of many races, creeds and colors behaving terribly and supporting negative stereotypes.
But I am not a bubba hunter. I am not irrational and take my right to keep and bear arms very seriously, treat my guns with respect and am not looking for an excuse to use one on someone else. I have never and will never support any programs that give power of one race over another, one belief over another, one gender over another, one lifestyle over another.
Not all hunters are bubbas. MOST hunters aren’t bubbas but are very conscientious, responsible, ethical and moral people. Same for gun owners and gun rights advocates. Same for Pollocks, and white anglo-saxons and gays/lexbians/transgender, Christian, Muslim, Black, Red, Yellow, White.
If we are going to generate a hysteria over a Mosque at ground zero, we’d better damn well find a good reason other than some weak association between a bunch of fundamentalists terrorist assholes who thought it was a good idea to fly planes into buildings and the rest of a religion that makes up 22% of the entire world’s population. At this point in time, support in Islamic circles for the acts of terrorists and jihadists is diminishing. Do you really want to give them a reason to jump back on the bandwagon by condemning the entirety of Islam by the acts of a radical minority?
