Just a short post today to jot down a thought that came to me while re-reading Atlas Shrugged and hearing the bum on the train talk about the vote at the 20th Century Motor company.
It got me to realizing that all the talk about death panels in Obamacare is irrelevant. Sure, there may be such a board written into the prior stimulus bill, but whether or not there is a death panel now, one thing remains certain.
The reality is, that even with the greatest of intentions, an egalitarian design on social engineering will ultimately have to face the reality of finite resources. A reality that inevitably leads to some level of utilitarian decision making when assigning those limited resources.
Once a system exists with finite resources, the necessity of rationing won’t be something the government will necessarily have to inflict upon you, you’ll demand it. Once you see that your child is sick and needs attention but it’s going to some elderly person with maybe 3 years left to live, you’ll demand higher preference and wish for the elder’s death yourself!
